Skin Cancer Facts
  •  Most common form of cancer in the U.S.
  • 1 in 5 Americans will develop skin cancer
  • Forms of skin cancer include: basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma and melanoma
  • Melanoma is the most dangerous—it may again as a mole that alters in  appearance or could originate on normal skin. More than 90% are caused by mutations in the DNA of skincells called melanocytes
  • 75,000 new cases of melanoma are diagnosed each year
  • Approximately 9,000 melanoma related deaths each year in the U.S.
Factors that Increase Risk for Developing Skin Cancer
  • Personal history of skin cancer
  • Family history of skin cancer
  • Multiple atypical moles
  • Sun exposure, tanning beds
  • Fair skin
Signs of Melanoma
A skin lesion may be cancerous if it exhibits they following characteristics
  • Ragged edges
  • Uneven shape
  • Changes in texture
  • Changes in size
  • Bleeding
Protecting Yourself
  • Wear sunscreen everyday–SPF 30 or above with broad spectrum protection
  • Reapply sunscreen every 180 minutes, more often if swimming or sweating
  • Avoid tanning—outside and in tanning beds
  • Seek shade—UV rays are strongest between 10 am & 4 pm
  • Cover up—wear a wide brimmed hat, long sleeves and pants when outside
Pay attention to your spots and get checked routinely!
